Ban on laptops at New Haven coffee shop has customers talking - to one another

The Associated Press via The Haven Register August 4, 2012 NEW HAVEN — Lulu de Carrone was behind the counter at her coffee place in the East Rock neighborhood one day about four years ago when she noticed it was “crypt-like quiet,” which is very unusual for her sociable gathering spot. Although there were four customers present in her small shop, they were sitting at separate tables, absorbed with solitary tasks on their laptops. De Carrone thought to herself, “This isn’t what I want.” “Then two older women came in, laughing and talking,” she recalled. “And the people with laptops gave them dirty looks!” At that moment, it occurred to de Carrone, “I’ll go sell pencils outside the British Art Museum rather than own a place like this.” And so up went the sign on the entryway door: “Please, no!
